I’m more proud of ‘A Night With’ than anything I’ve ever done in music.
When I first developed the show at Whammy Bar in early 2022 I described it as a culmination of everything I’d worked on up until that point. Podcast interviews, event promotion, musical curation and creative lessons all coming together to craft a super unique experience for both audiences and artists.
So often artists perform live in hostile contexts. Maybe they are playing to a room of new people and trying to nail a good first impression, or they are merely being treated as the background soundtrack to each punters weekend escape.
As part of A Night With each musical guest and their art is taken seriously as the main point of focus for the entire room of eager and present music loving audience.
In this desperate digital age some artists never get a chance to experience how appreciative people are of their music and its absolutely magic being part of that connection.
Whats The Vibe?
The show itself is seated, 90 minutes long and alternates between conversation and live performance from the artist.
I leave it completely up to the guest to decide on setup ~ solo or full band or anything in between ~ and the set-list they play.
I am more guide than host. I tend not to pre-prepare any questions which allows me to be more reactive and engaged in listening to the performance and the guest on the night. I also throw conversation into the audience to keep us on track with the energy of the room as a whole.
All these ingredients meld together into a living room gig atmosphere where you’re not only hearing amazing music but interacting with it on an a grounded and authentic level.
Vogelegends!
Im super excited to be finally putting the show on in Wellington. The team behind Vogelmorn Bowling Club have been super proactive in reaching out to me and letting me know the show is wanted in their space which is so energy-affirming and rare.
Being invited into spaces like Vogelmorn Bowling Club is one of the real privileges of putting this show on ~ getting to know the staff and feeling the spirit of the community is something that always leaves me energised and grateful.
FTWMO: For Those Who Miss Out
One intention I have this year is to record these shows in some way. It is something I am very cautious about as the atmosphere of the room and therefore the guests safety and vulnerability is a super delicate thing. I would never want anything to be held back for the people in the room because of a potential recording which is a valid fear.
For this reason I think I will set the precedent that there is no guarantee of how much of the recorded show will be shared publicly and that decision will be left to the guest themselves. I have a feeling someone like Vera will be cool with most of it going out in some form ~ but sometimes you may just get a song or nothing at all.
