Community Check-In
Little bits from last wee while including new music, new podcast episodes and more.
Hey you!
Thanks for being here I really appreciate it, this outlet for my musical musing is not only enjoyable personally but has lead to meeting so many new people, artists and fans alike, that I feel like I’ve gotten away with some kind of trick.
Life is crazy, and lots of people are doing it tough out there after some severely wacky years so I hope you are being kind to yourself, and sharing that kindness with those around you who deserve it.
This will be a semi-regular format with more little bite-sized topics included that don’t need their own full blogs, but are still something I want to share.
Enjoy, and stay hydrated!
New Music For You
Every Friday I make myself a coffee and indulge in a big morning of new releases, playlists and social media posts, putting the songs that really capture me into ‘The Best Now’.
This week its a mix of indie guitar from Men I Trust & Alvvays, plus some moody hip-hop vibes from Canadian trio Planet Giza and Aotearoa’s own Avantdale Bowling Club and my favourite jam from the new meandering King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard album ‘Iron Lung’.
Follow ‘The Best Now’ playlist to stay updated on all my recommendations as it grows over the week.
Welcome Back To Laneway Festival & Hello To A New Podcast Series!
Everyone’s favourite ‘alternative’ music festival is back with St Jeromes Laneway Festival being announce for January 2023 in Auckland. This edition brings the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Joji, Slowthai, Fred Again, Yard Act & many more to our shores, as well as platforming local acts like The Beths, Hans & DARTZ (the band from Wellington, New Zealand).
I got together with my friend, and music journalist Alex Cabré, to record the first in a semi-regular series of episodes for my podcast Hahko FM in which we discuss (and probably argue) about different music topics and news.
This week we focus on Laneway Festival, our impressions of the lineup, who the festival might be for and whether thats changed over the lifetime of the festival itself.
Have a listen and find out if we think Laneway is actually any good!
Aotearoa Music Awards Finalist’s Announced.
The local music industries favourite night of self-congratulating is back for another year and some friends of the pod have gotten deserved nominations for their hard work.
A big shout-out to two-time guest on Hahko Meets Humans Leaping Tiger who gets a Best Electronic nod for his album ‘Soulsleep’ and also to big Ben Woods whose album ‘Dispeller’ is nominated in the Alternative category.
If you haven’t listened to Ben’s album yet, the very first Hahko FM episode covers the record and his feelings in depth.
Alex and I will be discussing the nominations in depth next week so watch out for that!
