three albums that are objectively good and if you don't like them then it's a you problem
ft. woozy bedroom pop, poetic pub music and some post-kraunt-punk-disco.
All of the artist’s mentioned below made their first appearance in the Hahkoverse™️ on the Hahko’s Songs For Personal Consumption playlist so if you want a more single focused experience that I updated weekly with my latest favourite songs then give it a follow!!
Somni - ‘Gravity’
For Fans Of: Toro Y Moi, Beats To study To, Sufjan Stevens
Bandcamp | Spotify | Apple Music
Somni is a woozy, hazy, side-chaining crazed bedroom producer that recently peaked his head over the laptop and found his voice.
Producers adding vocals to their tracks and swinging the pendulum away from beats and into the realm of ‘songs’ can be a dicey proposition.
Yet, I was blown away with how well Somni’s understated and lush production worked with the laidback folk sounds poking through - all carried by a mellow and emotive vocal.
‘Gravity’ is an immersive record in the sense that once you enter the world of Somni, everything gains warm round edges and hopeful tones - like a sleepy drive back from the beach.
The production is mind-blowing as well if you’re into that kinda thing - from production to mixing, its creative and seamless. Check out ‘Grown Into You’ from the previous album Home to hear some real wizardry and get some context.
Grian Chatten - ‘Chaos For The Fly’
For Fans Of: Fontaines D.C, Grizzly Bear, The Last Of The Shadow Puppets
Bandcamp | Spotify | Apple Music
Better known as frontman of Dublin band Fontaines D.C - Grian Chatten frames his acclaimed lyrics within light, organic and often dramatic soundscapes that make you feel like you’ve wandered into the best live-music hosting Irish pub in the world.
The core songs are classic, catchy and evocative.
What perks my ear on repeat listens is the subtle moments of ear candy happening quite consistently throughout the record - as impressive in their sound as the subtle ways they are woven into such a natural sounding record.
Squid - ‘O Monolith’
For Fans Of: Battles, black midi, The Mars Volta
Bandcamp | Spotify | Apple Music
Squid are rhythmic + obtuse + noisy+ scattered & concrete.
They’ve developed a unique sound - delivering on blistering singles like ‘Houseplants’ with their enigmatic and engaging debut album ‘Bright Green Field’ a heady mix of repetitive vocals, synthesisers, post-punk guitars playing math rock riffs and a penchant for the weird.
This band is pretty mind-bending while remaining groovy - an impressive feat. The singer also sounds like the guy from B-52’s and thats cool as fuck. Give yourself some time and settle in for pretty unreal musical fever dream that will make you feel uncool to be in any band other than Squid.
